Situation

The core competency of the group is building construction, building materials and real estate development in Spain. The first two years of company activities in Poland concerned exclusively residential sector. Than thanks to the booming market, the HQ made the decision regardubg introduction of construction department. Just after the important extension of the structure, the worldwide crisis came with its domino results. One of the most important decisions regarding the Polish market was the exchange on the position of Managing Director. The priority was to change the company’s strategy in Poland, instead of development activity the Polish branch has to focus now on strict management policy.

Assessment

We decided to analyzed few possible search directions: consulting companies, developers, constructors and banking.

Methodology/Solution/Challenge

Keeping this approach, we selected the appropriate candidates and final candidates have been short listed. Unfortunately the directives of HQ have changed. They cut the budget for the position and none of the short listed candidates could been considered. We had the first serious moment. We sat down again with all managers involved in this project and changed the strategy, by extending the search geographically. The project had to be carried out in a very limited time.

Candidate

Even though it was a though challenge, we managed to select 4 candidates matching criteria of our client. Two of them have been introduced to the company owner in Spain and one has been finally accepted. The relocation was not a problem, because the candidate was interested in movement to place where the company was located.

Post-mortem

The other difficult moment arrived. We have been informed about the final suspension of the closure for either 6 months or longer. We again sat down with decision makers and agreed for the final official statement for the candidate. Everything finished in the professional way although we didn’t get to the final goal – employment. From the ethical point of view, iit was the right decision taking into account all factors we found out during the meeting. This process we went through was compulsory for the client to make the final decision without committing a serious mistake.
